Identification proof requirements

We must satisfy identification requirements for all new customers. If your client hasn't been identified electronically, you'll need to provide copies of ID to confirm both their name and current address (this must be two different forms of ID).

Please don’t provide original copies of valuable ID documents, such as Passports and Driving Licences. Copies of valuable documents should be provided instead.

UK and European Economic Area Nationals

UK Photo ID:

Please provide one of the following:

  • Copy of a valid full UK Passport
  • Copy of a valid full UK or Northern Ireland photocard Driving Licence

Alternatively, please provide one document from the proof of name list and one different document from the proof of current address list.

Acceptable proof of name

Copy of:

  • Valid full passport
  • Valid full UK or Northern Ireland paper/photocard Driving Licence (must confirm current address)
  • National ID Card (EEA Countries)
  • UK based Bank or Building Society postal statement* or credit card statement* (less than three months old. Internet, branch stamped/printed banking statements, mini statements and store cards aren't acceptable)
  • Benefit letter (less than twelve months old from government organisation only)
  • Employer’s ID Card (this includes Armed Forces ID Cards)
  • HMRC Tax Code Notice (less than 12 months old)

Acceptable proof of current address:

Copy of:

  • Valid full UK or Northern Ireland paper/photocard Driving Licence (must confirm current address)
  • UK based Bank or Building Society postal statement* or credit card statement* (less than three months old. Internet, branch stamped/printed banking statements, mini statements and store cards aren't acceptable)
  • Building Society Passbook
  • Gas, electricity or telephone bill (less than three months old. Mobile phone bills, internet e-bills and internet statements aren't acceptable)
  • Mortgage statement*, water bill or council tax bill (less than twelve months old, internet statements are not acceptable).
  • Benefit Letter (less than twelve months old from government organisation only)
  • Housing Benefit Letter (less than twelve months old from local authority)
  • Credit Union Statement/passbook (less than three months old)
  • HMRC Tax Documents (Must be less than twelve months old and show notice of Tax coding; Tax Notice; Coding assessment; Tax Statement; Tax Credit Document)

We'll accept BFPO addresses, only if your clients are UK home owners and evidence is provided.

We won't accept proofs of name and address from Nationwide, The Mortgage Works or addresses containing PO box numbers.

*Statements must be from a different source, for example a bank or credit card statement for proof of name can’t be from the same provider as a mortgage statement for proof of address.

Non European Economic Area Nationals

If your client doesn't come from the European Economic Area, you'll need to provide copies of their passport and proof of permanent or indefinite rights to reside in the UK.
